FIELD NOTES

For my piece, I wanted to portray anxiety and claustrophobia and I had the idea to do this with repetitions of dissonance and feedback throughout the piece. When the track starts it is calm with minimal noises and just the simple atmospheric soundscapes of a train station recorded at Stepney green. As the track progresses it gets more chaotic with random spikes in volume and feedback ringing throughout. This symbolises the progressing levels of anxiety as you travel on your journey and it suddenly disappearing without a trace as you reach you destination. The use of effects in the song helps add to the chaotic sound of the track with reverbs giving certain features space making them feel like a large room. This clashes with the overdriven and treble boosted sounds that jump up in loudness creating chaotic feedback spikes. I added an industrial hip hop track called “NO LOVE ” by the band Death Grips to add some depth and extra noise to the track giving it multiple layers of chaos. I chose this theme due to the chaotic journey I have to take every day on a busy sweaty train just to get to my class in college. Personally, trains make me very anxious and have caused me to feel trapped and uncomfortable due to the crowds of people talking loudly and lack of personal space.
